It is a long way from airplanes and raining bombs on enemy positions from the sky, but SPO1 Callo is indeed flying high – from his achievements as a dedicated and talented police officer on the ground.

While he has not been able to put his training as an aeronautical engineer to good use, his keen nose for intelligence work, his sharp eye for operational details, and his strong sense of duty have all combined to produce a skillful and highly competent law enforcer who have helped put criminal elements and lawless groups out of business.

The most notorious of the said groups include the operators of a big-time shabu factory in Calapan City, a robbery and hold up gang operating in Metro Manila and nearby provinces, illegal loggers, illegal gambling operators, and communist insurgents. In all these operations, SPO1 Callo relies on members of an extensive Barangay Intelligence Network whom he helped train and re-organize into an effective police auxiliary group for intelligence gathering. SPO1 Callo’s ability to engage the community has made all the difference in his work as an intelligence NCO.

Through a comprehensive barangay visitation program and the conduct of regular assemblies and dialogues, he was able to double the number of volunteers, which in turn made his job of gathering valuable information relatively easier. His efforts have been warmly supported by the private sector, which also benefits from a safer and more secure business environment.

As an added incentive for the community, SPO1 Callo helps identify security requirements for public as well private individuals and facilities, and provides training on security procedures, including hostage-taking, bomb threat management and bomb search exercises, among others.

He has also taken the responsibility of looking after the professional and personal welfare of his colleagues, conducting echo seminars and refresher courses on important topics such as jurisprudence, while initiating a livelihood project to benefit out-of-school dependents of fellow police personnel.
